Gov. Mbah Calls for Strategic Infrastructure Investments to Boost South-East Connectivity, Trade and Economic Growth.

ENUGU State Governor, His Excellency, Barr. Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has urged the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) to prioritise strategic infrastructure projects, including gas pipeline development, regional railway networks and industrial expansion, as part of efforts to accelerate economic growth and transform the South-East into a major industrial hub.

The governor emphasised the importance of coordinated regional development initiatives capable of improving connectivity among states, strengthening commercial activities and creating an enabling environment for large-scale investments.

According to the reported position, the proposed infrastructure priorities are expected to address critical development gaps across the region while unlocking the economic potential of the South-East’s human and natural resources.

Gas Infrastructure to Drive Industrial Growth

Mbah’s call for gas pipeline development highlights the importance of reliable and affordable energy in supporting manufacturing, processing and other industrial activities.

A well-developed gas infrastructure network could help provide industries with alternative energy sources, reduce operating costs and attract investors seeking locations with dependable power and energy supplies.

For the South-East, where manufacturing, trade and entrepreneurship remain significant economic drivers, improved access to energy could strengthen existing businesses while encouraging the establishment of new industrial facilities.

Regional Railways to Improve Connectivity

The governor also identified regional railway development as a strategic priority for improving transportation and commercial integration across the South-East.

An efficient railway network could facilitate the movement of agricultural produce, manufactured goods, raw materials and passengers, potentially reducing transportation costs and easing pressure on existing road networks.

Better rail connectivity could also strengthen links between industrial centres, commercial markets, agricultural communities and neighbouring economic corridors, helping businesses reach wider markets.

SEDC and the South-East Industrial Agenda

The South-East Development Commission has an important role to play in coordinating regional development priorities and supporting initiatives that address shared infrastructure and economic challenges.

Mbah’s position underscores the need for the commission to pursue projects that deliver long-term economic value, encourage public-private partnerships and promote collaboration among the five South-East states.

Beyond infrastructure development, an industrial transformation agenda would require sustained investment in skills development, technology, logistics, electricity, access to finance and a business-friendly environment.

If effectively planned and implemented, these interventions could strengthen the region’s productive capacity, expand employment opportunities for young people and improve the competitiveness of South-East businesses.

Aligning Regional Development with Enugu’s Economic Vision

The governor’s call also aligns with his broader economic ambition of positioning Enugu State as a leading destination for investment, innovation, tourism and industrial development.

Through strategic infrastructure investments and regional cooperation, the South-East could improve its capacity to attract domestic and international investors while creating stronger economic linkages among its states.

However, the successful delivery of major gas and railway projects would depend on detailed feasibility studies, sustainable financing, intergovernmental coordination, transparent procurement and clear implementation timelines.

The proposed priorities therefore present an opportunity for the SEDC and regional stakeholders to develop a coordinated infrastructure roadmap that translates the South-East’s economic potential into measurable development outcomes.
