Dr. Mbah Insists Political Connections Must Not Shield Anyone Found Responsible as Opposition Raises Security Concerns.

Enugu Media Village (EMV), the Most Updated Online News Platform— October 15, 2026.

GOVERNOR of Enugu State, His Excellency, Barr. Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has called for a thorough and impartial police investigation into reported political violence in the state, particularly a shooting incident that left a citizen injured during activities linked to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The governor made the call in a statewide address following reports of violence at the NDC secretariat in Enugu and at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, where supporters had reportedly gathered in connection with the party’s governorship candidate, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa. The incidents reportedly occurred on Saturday, October 10, 2026.

Mbah expressed concern over the incident, sympathising with those injured, residents who experienced fear and families affected by the violence.

He stressed that every citizen, regardless of political affiliation, must be able to exercise their democratic rights without intimidation, threats or violence.

Mbah: Evidence Must Establish What Happened

The governor urged the police to conduct a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported violence and determine responsibility based on verifiable evidence.

He stated that anyone found responsible for criminal acts would be held accountable through the appropriate legal process, irrespective of political connections.

Mbah also indicated that he expected a formal briefing on the progress of the investigation, underscoring the importance of transparency and accountability in addressing the incident.

Government and NDC Present Differing Accounts

The reported incidents have generated disagreement between the Enugu State Government and the NDC over the circumstances surrounding the violence.

The state government, through the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, denied allegations of government involvement. It also offered an account of the airport gathering that the NDC disputed.

The opposition party, meanwhile, has called for an independent investigation into the reported attacks on its supporters and the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The competing accounts underline the need for an impartial investigation that establishes the facts without prejudgment or political interference.

Opposition Parties Call for Protection

The incident has also intensified concerns about the safety of political gatherings in Enugu State ahead of the 2027 elections.

On October 14, representatives of several opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Labour Party, African Democratic Congress (ADC) and NDC, called on security agencies to investigate reported incidents of violence and intimidation involving their members and supporters.

The parties urged authorities to protect citizens regardless of political affiliation and ensure that political activities can take place peacefully. Their allegations and concerns require appropriate investigation by the relevant authorities.

Peace, Security and Democratic Rights

Governor Mbah reiterated that political differences should be resolved through lawful democratic engagement rather than violence.

He maintained that the responsibility of government includes protecting lives, upholding the law and ensuring that justice is pursued without favouritism.

As investigations proceed, residents and political stakeholders will be looking to the relevant security agencies to establish the facts, protect potential witnesses and ensure that any proven wrongdoing is addressed in accordance with the law.

The outcome of the investigation will be important in clarifying the circumstances of the reported shooting and addressing concerns over the safety of political participants in Enugu State.
