ENUGU Air is set to launch its first international route today, Wednesday, September 23, with direct flights connecting Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, with Douala International Airport, Cameroon, opening a new regional air corridor between Southeastern Nigeria and Central Africa.

The new route marks an important expansion of Enugu Air’s operations beyond Nigeria’s domestic aviation network. The airline is scheduled to operate the Enugu–Douala service twice weekly, on Mondays and Wednesdays, according to its Chief Operating Officer, Ugonna Agubuokwu.

Under the published schedule, flights from Enugu are expected to depart at 12:45 p.m. and arrive in Douala at 1:45 p.m., while the return service is scheduled to leave Douala at 2:30 p.m. and arrive in Enugu at 3:30 p.m.

The airline says the route is designed to bring businesses, families and commercial opportunities in Nigeria and Cameroon closer together while making regional travel more accessible.

The timing of the flights is also intended to allow passengers originating from Lagos and Abuja to connect through Enugu for onward travel to Douala, potentially giving Enugu a larger role in regional passenger movement.

Enugu Air, which is based at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, commenced operations in July 2025. The airline subsequently obtained its own Air Operator Certificate from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority in March 2026, according to reports on its development.

The launch of the international route comes amid broader efforts by the Enugu State Government under Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah to strengthen connectivity, investment, tourism, trade and economic activity across the state. The administration has positioned improved transportation infrastructure and aviation connectivity as part of its wider economic-development agenda.

For Enugu’s business community, traders, investors and travellers, the direct connection to Douala creates another potential channel for movement between Southeastern Nigeria and Cameroon without requiring a domestic connection through Lagos or Abuja.

Douala is Cameroon’s principal commercial centre and an important economic gateway in Central Africa. The new air link therefore places Enugu on a direct aviation corridor with one of the region’s major commercial cities.

The development also comes as Enugu continues to expand its transportation infrastructure and economic ambitions, with aviation increasingly being presented as a component of the state’s strategy to attract investment and connect its economy to wider African markets.

As Enugu Air begins its regional operations, attention will now turn to passenger demand, route sustainability and the airline’s plans for additional African destinations.
