Two-Day Hands-on Workshop Equips Lecturers and Postgraduate Students with AI Skills to Strengthen Research, Teaching and Academic Productivity.
Enugu Media Village (EMV), the Most Updated Online News Platform — October 28, 2026.
THE FACULTY of Health Sciences and Technology, College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, has trained more than 120 lecturers, researchers and postgraduate students in the practical application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to academic research and teaching.
The two-day workshop, held from October 20 to 21, 2026, was organised in collaboration with The Beaconsmith Collective, an Enugu-based technology organisation focused on applied artificial intelligence and institutional capacity development.
The programme aimed to equip participants with practical skills to integrate AI tools into their academic responsibilities, improve productivity and support better research outcomes.
The training attracted university officials, including the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Technology, Prof. Antoninus Obinna Ezeukwu, and the Deputy Provost of the College of Medicine, Prof. Charles Ugwoke Eze, who represented the Provost.
Workshop Focuses on Practical Applications of AI
Facilitated by Engr. Nzube Chikwado Ndiokwelu, founder of The Beaconsmith Collective, the workshop moved beyond theoretical discussions to demonstrate how AI could assist academics with everyday professional tasks.
Participants explored the use of AI in preparing lecture materials, reviewing scientific literature, designing student assessments, identifying international research grants and discovering opportunities for collaboration with other researchers.
The practical sessions were designed to help lecturers and researchers streamline routine academic activities, allowing them to devote more time to critical thinking, teaching, research development and knowledge creation.
The programme also explored how AI tools could help identify emerging research opportunities and support collaboration across institutions and disciplines.
Researchers Warned Against Blind Reliance on AI
Beyond its practical benefits, the workshop addressed concerns about the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated information, particularly in medical research and clinical education.
Participants discussed the risk of fabricated references, inaccurate responses and other errors that may arise when AI tools generate information without sufficient factual grounding.
The facilitators emphasised that AI should complement, rather than replace, professional expertise, scientific verification and ethical responsibility.
Researchers were encouraged to independently verify references, assess evidence critically and ensure that information generated by AI meets established academic standards before incorporating it into publications, teaching materials or research findings.
This emphasis is particularly important in health sciences, where inaccurate information can undermine research quality and potentially affect clinical learning and professional decision-making.
Building Capacity for Technology-Driven Education
The workshop represents the second AI for Academic Productivity engagement involving The Beaconsmith Collective at the University of Nigeria. It follows an earlier training programme organised for the university’s Faculty of the Social Sciences in August 2026.
At the conclusion of the Enugu Campus workshop, the Faculty of Health Sciences and Technology presented a plaque of appreciation to The Beaconsmith Collective in recognition of its contribution to the programme.
The engagement highlights the growing importance of digital literacy and emerging technologies in higher education, particularly as universities explore new approaches to research, teaching and academic administration.
What the Development Means for Enugu
For Enugu State’s academic and research community, initiatives of this nature offer opportunities to strengthen local research capacity, improve access to emerging technologies and prepare scholars for an increasingly digital academic environment.
If the skills acquired are applied effectively, AI-assisted research could help academics organise information, explore new research questions, identify funding opportunities and collaborate more efficiently with colleagues in Nigeria and abroad.
However, the long-term value of such training will depend on sustained access to appropriate digital tools, institutional support, responsible implementation and continuous professional development.
The initiative also reinforces the need for universities to prepare students and lecturers not only to use new technologies but to understand their limitations and apply them responsibly.
