THE COLLEGE of Immaculate Conception (CIC), Enugu, has emerged winner of the Enugu State Secondary Schools Debate Championship, outperforming other participating schools in an intellectual contest focused on the merits and demerits of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in society.

Bethel Home Convent, Enugu, secured second position, while Drew Philipps Academy finished third in the competition, which attracted entries from over 120 secondary school students across the state.

The two-day championship was organised by Placee Educational Consult (PEC), in partnership with House on the Rock Church, Enugu, to promote intellectual development, critical thinking and effective communication among young learners.

AI Debate Highlights the Future of Education

The competition centred on the topic, “Artificial Intelligence (AI): Its Merits and Demerits on the Society at Large,” encouraging students to examine the opportunities and potential challenges associated with the growing use of AI in education and other aspects of human life.

Through spontaneous arguments, research-based submissions and persuasive presentations, participants demonstrated their ability to analyse contemporary issues, defend their positions and engage in constructive intellectual discussions.

The championship also highlighted the importance of equipping young people with the knowledge and analytical skills required to navigate an increasingly technology-driven world.

CSDA Boss Urges Students to Embrace Discipline and Hard Work

The General Manager of the Enugu State Community and Social Development Agency (CSDA), Hon. Monday Diamond Ani, who delivered the keynote address, emphasised the importance of the state’s Smart School Initiative in advancing educational and technological development.

Ani encouraged parents, guardians and students to take full advantage of the learning opportunities provided by the initiative, noting that technology-driven education could help bridge the learning gap between students in remote communities and their counterparts in more technologically advanced environments.

He described the establishment of 260 Smart Schools, one in each political ward, as an important step towards expanding access to modern educational resources and preparing young learners for emerging opportunities.

The CSDA boss also reminded the students that academic achievement and personal success require more than favourable family backgrounds.

He stressed that discipline, sound moral values, patriotism, humility and consistent hard work remain essential ingredients for individual development and societal progress.

Ani further encouraged the students to respect their teachers, remain committed to their studies and take pride in contributing to the development of Enugu State.

Organisers Commended for Promoting Academic Excellence

Ani commended the convener of the championship, Mr. Ezekiel Kilani, Chief Executive Officer of Placee Educational Consult, for investing in educational initiatives that encourage young people to develop their intellectual abilities and confidence.

The partnership between PEC and House on the Rock Church, Enugu, demonstrated the role that educational organisations and faith-based institutions can play in creating platforms for learning beyond the traditional classroom.

EMV: Investing in Young Minds for a Better Tomorrow

The Enugu State Secondary Schools Debate Championship underscores the importance of encouraging students to participate in academic competitions that strengthen critical thinking, public speaking, research and problem-solving skills.

As Artificial Intelligence continues to reshape education, employment and communication, providing young people with opportunities to understand its benefits, limitations and ethical implications is increasingly important.

The outstanding performance of CIC, Bethel Home Convent and Drew Philipps Academy reflects the value of nurturing intellectual curiosity and healthy academic competition among students.
