ABIA State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has directed the new management of the Abia Industrial and Innovation Park (AIIP) in Owaza, Ukwa West Local Government Area, to accelerate work on the project, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to making the facility operational.

The directive followed a project-site inspection and subsequent briefing at the governor’s office on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. The inspection was undertaken to familiarise the park’s newly appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Ms Sandra Ivonye-Ntofon, with the facility, assess existing infrastructure and identify improvements needed to attract investors.

According to reports published by Premium Times and Vanguard on October 14, the governor, represented during the site visit by his Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, said the administration was determined to complete the project and translate investor interest into tangible industrial development.

Government Plans Access-Road Improvements

As part of efforts to address infrastructure requirements, Governor Otti directed the Commissioner for Works to assess a proposed shorter access road linking the expressway to the industrial park.

The administration also identified perimeter fencing as a priority for securing the facility. These measures are intended to improve accessibility, strengthen site security and support the park’s eventual operations.

The governor further pledged the state government’s support, including the provision of resources required to move the project forward.

Steel Plant Relocation Signals Investor Interest

One of the developments highlighted during the briefing was the reported relocation of a steel plant currently operating in another state to the industrial park.

The governor cited the proposed relocation as evidence of investor interest in the project. However, the announcement does not, by itself, establish that the plant has completed its relocation or commenced operations at Owaza.

The park is envisioned as an industrial and innovation hub capable of attracting manufacturing businesses, stimulating commerce and creating employment opportunities for residents of Abia State and neighbouring communities.

Modular Refinery and Gas Infrastructure

The Commissioner for Petroleum, Professor Joel Ogbonna, said the project could help harness Abia’s oil and gas resources for economic development.

He identified a planned modular refinery and compressed natural gas (CNG) facility as components expected to support industrial activity, create jobs and stimulate growth.

These facilities remain part of the broader development ambition, and their operational status and delivery timelines should be confirmed through subsequent official updates.

New Management Assures Stakeholders

Ms Ivonye-Ntofon pledged to work towards completing the project and realising its industrial and economic objectives.

The lawmaker representing Ukwa West State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Mr Godwin Adiele, welcomed the initiative but urged the government to accelerate implementation so that host communities could begin to benefit from the anticipated economic impact.

The Traditional Prime Minister of Igiriukwu Autonomous Community, Owaza, Chief Uche Nwele, also pledged the community’s cooperation and acknowledged the government’s compensation and other steps taken towards developing the facility.

Economic Significance for Abia State

The Abia Industrial and Innovation Park represents an important part of the state government’s ambition to expand industrial production, attract domestic and international investment, strengthen local value chains and create sustainable employment.

Nevertheless, the project’s wider economic impact will depend on the pace of construction, the completion of supporting infrastructure, the actual arrival of investors and the commencement of commercial operations.

For residents of Ukwa West and the wider Abia business community, the immediate priority will be to see the latest directives translated into measurable progress at the project site.

Enugu Media Village (EMV), the Most Updated Online News Platform, will continue to monitor developments surrounding the Abia Industrial and Innovation Park and other initiatives shaping economic growth across the South-East.
