THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned political parties and candidates against vote buying ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that preparations for the polls are progressing, with more than 80 per cent readiness reported.

The warning was issued by the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Anambra State, Dr. Queen Elizabeth Agwu, during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Awka on Friday, October 9, 2026. The meeting brought together political party representatives, candidates, community leaders and media stakeholders to discuss preparations for the forthcoming elections. <Cite refs={[“turn564956search0″,”turn564956search1”]}/>

Agwu stated that the Commission would pay close attention to candidates’ campaign spending and monitor attempts to influence voters through money or other inducements. She warned that individuals involved in electoral offences would face legal consequences.

The REC urged political parties and candidates to focus their campaigns on presenting their programmes, policies and development plans to the electorate rather than attempting to purchase votes. She also called on citizens to report suspected cases of vote buying to the appropriate authorities.

INEC Assures Nigerians of Election Preparedness

Speaking on the Commission’s level of preparedness, Agwu expressed confidence in the arrangements being made for the 2027 elections, assuring stakeholders that INEC was working to minimise operational challenges and strengthen the electoral process.

She urged political parties to begin preparations early, engage voters peacefully and avoid the use of thugs or any tactics capable of disrupting the exercise.

The REC further emphasised the importance of orderly campaigns, issue-based political engagement and respect for electoral rules, noting that candidates should allow voters to make independent decisions based on their assessment of the choices before them. <Cite refs={[“turn564956search0″,”turn564956search2”]}/>

Call for Credible and Peaceful Elections

The Commission’s warning comes amid growing preparations for the 2027 general elections, with electoral stakeholders expected to play their respective roles in promoting transparency, accountability and public confidence.

Vote buying remains a major concern because it can undermine the freedom of voters to choose their preferred candidates. Electoral integrity therefore requires compliance with the law, effective monitoring, responsible political campaigns and the willingness of citizens to reject inducements.

INEC’s appeal also places responsibility on political parties, candidates, security agencies, civil society organisations and the media to support peaceful participation and report practices that threaten the credibility of the polls.

As preparations continue, eligible voters are encouraged to verify their voter registration details, collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and remain informed about official electoral guidelines.

The 2027 elections will provide Nigerians with another opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to vote and participate in shaping the country’s leadership. The credibility of the process will depend not only on INEC’s preparations but also on the conduct of political actors and the active participation of citizens.
