ENUGU State Governor, His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has charged the 17 newly inaugurated local government chairmen to prioritise poverty reduction, grassroots development and effective service delivery in their respective council areas.
The governor gave the charge as he outlined his expectations for the new council administrations, stressing that their leadership must translate into tangible improvements in the lives of residents across the state.
Mbah emphasised that local governments have a critical role to play in addressing the needs of ordinary citizens, particularly through community-based development initiatives, improved access to essential services and programmes that create economic opportunities for vulnerable households.
The governor’s directive reinforces the importance of grassroots governance in achieving the state’s broader development objectives, with the council chairmen expected to demonstrate accountability, commitment and measurable results in the discharge of their responsibilities.
Mbah Emphasises Poverty Reduction and Community Development
The governor urged the council chairmen to make poverty reduction a central priority of their administrations, encouraging them to identify the most pressing needs of their communities and develop practical solutions.
He stressed that local government leadership should go beyond occupying public office to delivering programmes that improve living conditions, strengthen local economies and ensure that development reaches communities across the state.
The chairmen are expected to pay attention to critical areas such as primary healthcare, basic education, rural infrastructure, environmental sanitation, agricultural development and support for small businesses.
These areas remain important to grassroots development because they directly affect household welfare, access to opportunities and the ability of residents to participate in economic activities.
Mbah also underscored the need for the council administrations to remain accountable to the people and ensure that public resources are deployed towards projects and programmes that address genuine community needs.
Education and Welfare of Vulnerable Residents
Education and the welfare of vulnerable residents also featured among the governor’s expectations for the new council leaders.
He called for deliberate efforts to identify children who are out of school and take steps to improve school attendance, while encouraging the chairmen to support initiatives that strengthen learning outcomes in their respective local government areas.
The governor’s emphasis on education reflects the importance of human capital development in tackling poverty and creating opportunities for future generations.
Similarly, targeted interventions for vulnerable households, improved access to basic healthcare and support for local economic activities can help address some of the challenges confronting residents at the grassroots.
For these initiatives to achieve meaningful results, the councils will need to identify priority communities, establish clear objectives and monitor the implementation of their development programmes.
17 Council Chairmen Expected to Deliver
The 17 local government chairmen assumed office following their inauguration in September 2026, marking the beginning of a new phase of grassroots administration across Enugu State.
The governor’s charge places responsibility on the council leaders to demonstrate that their administrations can respond effectively to the needs of residents and contribute to the state’s development agenda.
Effective implementation will require cooperation with community leaders, traditional institutions, civil society organisations and relevant state government agencies.
Regular engagement with residents will also be essential in identifying development priorities, addressing complaints and ensuring that public projects reflect the needs of the communities they are intended to serve.
Accountability Key to Grassroots Development
Beyond policy declarations, the impact of the new administrations will ultimately be measured by the results they deliver.
Residents will expect improvements in essential services, transparent management of council resources, maintenance of community infrastructure and initiatives that expand economic opportunities.
The councils can strengthen public confidence by communicating their priorities, publishing progress reports where appropriate and providing clear information on how public funds are being used.
As the new administrations settle into office, the challenge before the chairmen is to translate the governor’s directive into practical programmes that reduce hardship, improve access to essential services and promote inclusive development across their respective local government areas.
Enugu Media Village (EMV) will continue to monitor developments in grassroots governance and report on initiatives aimed at improving service delivery and living standards across Enugu State.
