Government, Police Order Temporary Movement Restrictions Across the State to Support Peaceful and Secure Conduct of Poll.

ENUGU State Government and the Enugu State Police Command have announced temporary restrictions on vehicular and other forms of movement across the state ahead of Saturday’s September 26, 2026 Local Government Council elections.
The restriction is aimed at supporting the peaceful, orderly and secure conduct of the elections, which will be organised by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) across the state’s 17 Local Government Areas.
According to a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the state government’s restriction will run from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 26. Residents, political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders have been urged to comply with the directive and maintain peaceful conduct throughout the electoral process.
The government said exemptions would apply to ENSIEC officials, accredited election personnel, security personnel deployed for election duties, accredited election observers, authorised media practitioners, health workers, ambulance personnel, firefighters and other persons performing essential election or emergency duties.
The Police Command also announced a movement restriction from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., according to its spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe. The police said personnel had been deployed across the 17 LGAs and assured residents and voters of security before, during and after the elections.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Giwa, further directed that quasi-security outfits should not participate in election security operations and that armed security personnel attached to VIP escort duties should not escort VIPs to polling units.
The Police Command urged eligible voters to participate peacefully and warned political parties, candidates and their supporters against electoral offences and activities capable of disrupting the process. It also provided emergency contact numbers for residents to report suspicious activities or security concerns.
The local government elections are expected to produce chairmen for the 17 Local Government Councils and councillors for the 260 wards in Enugu State.
Residents are therefore advised to plan their movements accordingly and follow official security and electoral directives as the state prepares for Saturday’s exercise.
