ENUGU — A new chapter in Enugu State’s aviation and economic development story was opened yesterday as Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah flagged off the inaugural international flight of EnuguAir from the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, to Douala, Cameroon.
The inaugural Enugu–Douala route marks EnuguAir’s first international operation and represents a significant expansion of the airline’s regional connectivity. The development also places Enugu in closer direct air contact with Cameroon and the wider Central African market.
The new service is scheduled to operate twice weekly, on Mondays and Wednesdays, using a 76-seat Embraer E170 aircraft, with scheduled departure from Enugu at 12:45 p.m. and arrival in Douala at 1:45 p.m.
FROM THE COAL CITY TO CENTRAL AFRICA
Douala, Cameroon’s principal commercial and industrial centre, offers an important gateway for business, trade, tourism and people-to-people connections between southeastern Nigeria and Central Africa.
For travellers and businesses in Enugu and neighbouring states, the route could provide an alternative to longer road journeys and connecting through other Nigerian airports for onward international travel.
EnuguAir Chief Operating Officer, Ugonna Agubuokwu, described the development as more than the introduction of a new route, stressing its potential to strengthen connections between Nigeria and Cameroon.
The route is also expected to create opportunities for greater movement of traders, investors, professionals, tourists and other travellers between both countries.
FROM DOMESTIC OPERATIONS TO INTERNATIONAL SKIES
The international debut comes after EnuguAir completed the regulatory process that led to the issuance of its Air Operator Certificate by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority in March 2026.
The airline subsequently commenced domestic operations, connecting Enugu with several Nigerian destinations, including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, Owerri, Asaba, Benin and Warri.
Its transition into regional international operations within a relatively short period underscores the administration’s broader emphasis on improving air connectivity as part of Enugu’s economic development strategy.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Mbah said EnuguAir was not conceived merely as a symbol of prestige but as part of a broader plan to position Enugu as a destination for investment, business, tourism and quality living.
