THE Federal Government has launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, a nationwide digital addressing infrastructure designed to provide every addressable building in Nigeria with a unique and verifiable digital location identity.
The system, launched through the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) on October 1, uses Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to generate an 11-character alphanumeric postcode for homes, businesses, farms, schools, offices and other addressable locations across the country.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, said the initiative is intended to strengthen Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and create a reliable location layer that can be integrated into e-commerce, logistics, emergency response, financial services and public-service platforms.
The Federal Government is also encouraging technology developers, businesses and organisations to build applications and services around the new system. An API has been made available to enable approved organisations to integrate postcode information into their digital platforms.
According to the government, more accurate location data could improve last-mile delivery, emergency response, address verification, financial inclusion, urban planning and the delivery of essential public services.
The new system is now available to the public through the NIPOST postcode platform, where Nigerians can find and share the digital postcode associated with their building.
Early public testing, however, has produced mixed experiences, with some users reporting accurate location identification while others have encountered difficulties locating buildings or discrepancies in postcode information. NIPOST provides a process for reporting and requesting corrections to inaccurate location details.
The Federal Government says the initiative represents a major step towards strengthening Nigeria’s digital public infrastructure and creating a more connected environment for citizens, businesses and government institutions.
Enugu Media Village (EMV), the Most Updated Online News Platform, will continue to monitor the implementation of the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System and its impact on Nigerians, businesses and public-service delivery.
