Deputy Governor Says Enugu–SEDC Partnership Will Drive Food Security, Investment and Economic Opportunities Across the South-East.

The Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, has reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to deepening collaboration with the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) to transform agriculture, strengthen food production and create sustainable economic opportunities across the region.
Barr. Ossai stated this while representing Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah at the SEDC agricultural development programme in Enugu, where stakeholders gathered to advance a regional approach to agricultural development and economic transformation.
The Deputy Governor emphasised the importance of strategic partnerships between the Enugu State Government and SEDC, noting that collaborative efforts are critical to unlocking the vast agricultural potential of the South-East and positioning the sector as a major driver of economic growth.
A major component of the initiative is the 200-hectare integrated model farm at Nomeh Unateze in Nkanu East Local Government Area, which is being developed as part of the South-East Agro-Development Programme.
The project incorporates modern agricultural activities and value-chain components, including dairy production, poultry, fisheries, greenhouse farming, fodder production, processing, mechanisation and agricultural skills development.
Ossai highlighted the significance of moving beyond traditional farming practices towards modern, technology-driven and commercially sustainable agriculture. According to him, such an approach would not only increase food production but also create opportunities for young people, attract private investment and stimulate businesses connected to agriculture.
He further underscored the importance of developing agricultural value chains that allow farmers and entrepreneurs to benefit from production through processing, packaging, transportation, marketing and distribution.
The Deputy Governor noted that the initiative is consistent with the vision of the Mbah administration to build an economy driven by productivity, investment and innovation, while creating an enabling environment for businesses and productive enterprises to thrive.
The Enugu Government’s partnership with SEDC is also expected to strengthen regional cooperation, particularly in addressing food security, unemployment, agricultural productivity and the need to expand economic opportunities for the people of the South-East.
The Nomeh Unateze project is therefore expected to serve not merely as a farm, but as a model for integrated agricultural development capable of demonstrating how modern farming, technology, investment and human-capital development can work together to produce sustainable economic outcomes.
Barr. Ossai reaffirmed the state government’s willingness to support initiatives that promote inclusive development and provide practical opportunities for farmers, young entrepreneurs and investors.
The Deputy Governor’s participation further underscored the importance the Enugu State Government attaches to the SEDC partnership and the broader objective of developing agriculture as a major pillar of the South-East economy.
As implementation progresses, stakeholders are expected to focus on effective project delivery, community participation, private-sector investment and measurable outcomes that can be replicated across other parts of the region.
