Governor says Credible Journalism, Public Trust and Responsible Use of Technology are Critical to Nigeria’s Democratic Future.

ENUGU State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has called on Nigerian editors and media professionals to uphold truth, credibility and professional responsibility as the country prepares for another electoral cycle.
Governor Mbah made the call while addressing participants at the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC) organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Enugu.
The conference, which commenced today and continues on September 25, has attracted more than 500 editors and other stakeholders from across Nigeria. Its theme is “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive,” while the sub-theme focuses on “When Lies Look Real: Detecting and Debunking AI Disinformation Before, During and After Election.”
In his address, Mbah emphasised the central responsibility of the media in protecting democratic values, noting that journalists and editors occupy a critical position in shaping public understanding of government, elections and national issues.
The Governor’s message comes against the backdrop of growing concerns over misinformation, artificial intelligence-generated content and the rapid spread of unverified information through digital platforms. The conference itself is designed to examine how the media can maintain credibility while navigating these emerging challenges.
Mbah also highlighted the importance of fact-checking, professional journalism and public trust, stressing the need for media practitioners to remain committed to accuracy and responsible reporting. His intervention forms part of broader discussions at the conference on electoral justice, democratic stability, press freedom, election security and the changing digital media environment.
The Governor’s participation also provided an opportunity to showcase Enugu as the host city for one of Nigeria’s most significant annual gatherings of senior media professionals. The conference is bringing together editors, academics, government officials, civil society representatives and other stakeholders to discuss issues with implications for democracy and national development.
The opening programme features Vice President Kashim Shettima, who is scheduled to declare the conference open, while former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, is delivering the keynote address. Other speakers include Prof. Auwal Yadudu, Mazi Afam Osigwe SAN, Prof. Chinyere Okunna, Farooq Kperogi and other prominent voices from the media, legal and academic sectors.
