ENUGU — The South East Development Commission (SEDC) is set to flag off its first major agro-mechanisation project in Enugu State, as part of a regional programme designed to expand agricultural production, create employment opportunities and strengthen food security across the Southeast.
The flag-off is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at Nomeh Unateze Community in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, following a pre-assessment and community engagement visit by the Commission’s management.
The SEDC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Mark Okoye, said the Commission’s South East Agro Mechanisation Programme is targeting the development of up to 50,000 hectares of land for mechanised farming across the region.
According to the Commission, the initiative will initially establish pilot agricultural projects across the 15 senatorial districts of the five Southeast states, with each pilot farm expected to cover approximately 200 to 300 hectares. The farms are expected to support the cultivation of staple and cash crops, while some locations will also accommodate learning and productivity centres.
The programme is being positioned as a strategic response to challenges surrounding food insecurity, unemployment and agricultural underdevelopment, while creating opportunities for farmers, young people, agro-entrepreneurs and investors.
In Enugu State, the Commission has previously identified agricultural sites in different parts of the state, including locations in Nkpologwu, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, and Elugwu Akwu-Achi, Oji River Local Government Area, as part of preparations for the programme.
The Nomeh project therefore represents the first phase of a wider regional agricultural development strategy intended to introduce modern farming methods, improve productivity and strengthen agricultural value chains.
Dr. Okoye also disclosed that the project is expected to attract additional private-sector investment, with the Commission projecting substantial economic activity around the agricultural developments once implementation begins.
The initiative is expected to provide opportunities beyond primary farming, including agro-processing, logistics, agricultural services, equipment operation, marketing and other value-chain activities, thereby creating broader economic opportunities around the agricultural sector.
The SEDC’s agro-mechanisation programme is part of its wider mandate to promote sustainable development, investment and economic growth across the five Southeast states.
For Enugu, the commencement of the programme adds another significant development to ongoing efforts to expand the state’s agricultural and economic base, while strengthening the connection between rural production, employment and markets.
As preparations continue for the September 22 flag-off, attention will now focus on the implementation of the project and its potential impact on farmers, communities, young people and the broader agricultural economy of Enugu State and the Southeast.
