President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former President Goodluck Jonathan, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, and several Northern governors have mourned the death of elder statesman, businessman and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, who died at the age of 90.
Tukur, who died on Saturday, September 12, 2026, in Abuja, was buried in his hometown of Yola, Adamawa State, on Sunday in accordance with Islamic rites. He would have celebrated his 91st birthday on September 15.
President Tinubu described the late elder statesman as a towering figure whose career spanned public administration, governance, business, politics and pan-African economic leadership.
The President said Tukur made significant contributions to Nigeria’s political development and national unity, describing his death as the end of a remarkable chapter in the country’s political and economic history.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan also mourned Tukur, acknowledging his contributions to Nigeria’s political and economic development, while Speaker Tajudeen Abbas described him as one of the prominent political figures from the North who left an enduring mark on the nation’s history.
Tukur’s public career included his service as General Manager and Chief Executive of the Nigerian Ports Authority between 1975 and 1982. He later became Governor of the old Gongola State in 1983 and subsequently served as Minister of Industries.
He also played a significant role in Nigeria’s business and political circles, including serving as National Chairman of the PDP from 2012 to 2014. His influence extended beyond Nigeria through his involvement in continental business organisations and initiatives promoting African economic cooperation.
His burial in Yola attracted prominent Nigerians, including businessman Aliko Dangote, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, traditional rulers, political leaders and other dignitaries.
Following his death, Governor Fintiri declared three days of mourning in Adamawa State and directed that flags be flown at half-mast across the state.
The passing of Bamanga Tukur marks the departure of a prominent figure whose more than six decades of public service, business and political engagement left a notable imprint on Nigeria’s national life.
