ENUGU — The Senior Special Assistant to the Enugu State Governor on Research & Strategy, Hon. Engr. Uche Kelvin Edeh, has inspected the site of the collapsed building at Independence Layout, Enugu, where he assessed the situation and interacted with emergency responders, construction professionals and members of the media covering the incident.
The inspection formed part of ongoing efforts to monitor the emergency response following the collapse of the multi-storey building and to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to protect lives, secure the area and support rescue operations.
During the visit, Edeh met rescue and response teams already deployed to the scene, including personnel from the Enugu State Fire Service, Enugu State Ministry of Transport (MOT), Enugu Distress Response Squad (DRS), Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, as well as representatives of the Nigerian Institute of Builders.
The presence of the various emergency and professional teams underscored the coordinated response to the incident, particularly the urgent search-and-rescue operation aimed at locating and rescuing persons who may have been trapped beneath the debris.
Edeh carefully inspected the collapsed structure and received updates on the rescue activities at the scene. He also interacted with professionals and responders involved in the operation, while emphasising the importance of prioritising human lives and maintaining effective emergency coordination.
Speaking during an interview with journalists, including correspondents of Afia TV, Edeh assured Ndi Enugu that the administration of His Excellency, Barr. Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, remains deeply committed to protecting the lives and property of citizens and residents across the state.
He stated that the government responded promptly by deploying relevant accident-rescue and emergency-response agencies to the scene, with the primary objective of rescuing anyone trapped inside the collapsed structure.
According to him, the government’s response reflects the administration’s determination to build a responsive governance system in which emergencies are treated with urgency and every available resource is mobilised to save lives.
“The administration of His Excellency, Governor Peter Mbah, is committed to protecting the lives and properties of Ndi Enugu. Once an incident such as this occurs, our responsibility is to respond quickly, mobilise the relevant agencies and do everything possible to save lives.”
Edeh further stressed that the administration would continue to strengthen the security, safety and emergency-response landscape of Enugu State, while improving coordination among relevant government institutions and professional bodies.
He noted that incidents of building collapse also reinforce the importance of compliance with approved building regulations, professional supervision, appropriate construction standards and effective regulatory oversight.
The SSA emphasised that the government would continue to pay close attention to issues capable of threatening the safety and wellbeing of citizens, assuring residents that public safety remains a major component of the administration’s governance priorities.
MEDIA PRESENCE
The inspection also attracted significant media attention, with journalists and correspondents from several media organisations present at the scene to monitor developments and report on the emergency response.
Among the media organisations represented were Africa Independent Television (AIT), Channels Television, Afia TV, Journalists1010, and other members of the media.
Edeh granted interviews to journalists at the scene, providing clarification on the government’s response and reiterating the administration’s commitment to transparency and timely communication with the public during emergencies.
He commended the journalists for their role in keeping the public informed while also urging responsible reporting, particularly in sensitive emergency situations where inaccurate information could create unnecessary panic.
COMMITMENT TO SAFER ENUGU
The inspection, according to Edeh, further demonstrates the importance of continuous collaboration between government agencies, emergency responders, professional bodies and the media in protecting the people of Enugu State.
He commended the rescue personnel and other professionals who were working at the scene, acknowledging their courage, dedication and determination to locate and rescue anyone who might still be trapped beneath the rubble.
Edeh reiterated that the Peter Mbah administration would continue to strengthen emergency preparedness, institutional coordination, regulatory compliance and public safety mechanisms across the state.
He assured Ndi Enugu that the government would continue to place the protection of lives and property at the centre of its policies, while pursuing strategic measures aimed at making Enugu a safer, more secure and better-managed state.
The government, he said, would continue to respond decisively to emergencies and work with relevant stakeholders to prevent avoidable loss of lives and strengthen the resilience of communities across Enugu State.
