Lawmakers Urges Media Practitioners to Harness Digital Skills for Development, Promote Agriculture and Responsible Journalism.

ENUGU — The Member representing Enugu North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu, has empowered over 50 journalists and media practitioners with laptops and other working tools to enhance their professional capacity and productivity.
The empowerment was carried out at the closing ceremony of the Digital Skills for Agricultural Development 2026 seminar held in Enugu, as part of the lawmaker’s constituency development initiatives aimed at equipping stakeholders with relevant digital skills and modern working tools.
The initiative also focused on strengthening the capacity of journalists to effectively communicate issues surrounding agriculture, food safety, agricultural development and other matters of public interest.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Atu urged the beneficiaries to deploy the tools and knowledge acquired responsibly, stressing the important role of the media in shaping public opinion, educating citizens and promoting positive development.
He encouraged journalists and content creators to use digital platforms to promote agriculture and highlight opportunities available across the agricultural value chain, particularly for young Nigerians.
According to him, agriculture should be viewed not only from the perspective of traditional farming but also as a broad economic sector encompassing processing, marketing, technology, logistics and other emerging opportunities.
The lawmaker further called on media practitioners to raise public awareness about the dangers associated with the use of harmful and unapproved chemicals in food preservation.
He stressed that responsible journalism could contribute significantly to protecting public health while encouraging safer agricultural practices.
The training featured contributions from experts from Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), who addressed issues including agricultural communication, food safety and the responsibility of journalists to investigate and report practices that could endanger public health.
The Enugu State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Obinna Ogbuka, also commended Hon. Atu for the initiative, describing the calibre of resource persons and the focus of the programme as indications of the seriousness attached to strengthening professional capacity in the media.
The empowerment further underscores the importance of investing in media practitioners as critical stakeholders in development, particularly at a time when digital technology continues to reshape journalism and information dissemination.
By providing journalists with modern working tools alongside specialised training, the initiative seeks to improve their capacity to produce timely, accurate and development-oriented content.
The gesture also comes against the backdrop of Hon. Atu’s broader constituency interventions in education, youth empowerment, technology training and economic development.
