The University of East London (UEL) has conferred an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, honoris causa, on the Executive Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to leadership, enterprise, education and public service.

Governor Mbah received the prestigious honour on Thursday, September 10, 2026, during the university’s graduation ceremony at its Docklands Campus in London, marking a significant moment in his long-standing relationship with the institution where he studied law more than two decades ago.

Presenting the citation, the Vice-Provost (Business) and Executive Dean of UEL’s Royal Docks School of Business and Law, Professor Fatima Ana-Diab, described Governor Mbah as an outstanding alumnus whose academic excellence, leadership qualities and determination had continued to define his career in business and public service.

According to the university, Governor Mbah demonstrated remarkable leadership even as a student. He served as President of the Students’ Law Society and helped transform the society into the university’s Most Productive Society of the Year. He also represented students on the Students’ Representative Council and the School of Law Board, won the university’s Mooting Competition and represented UEL at an International Negotiation Competition.

The university further acknowledged how the qualities displayed during his student years have translated into his subsequent accomplishments as a lawyer, entrepreneur and public servant.

The honour is particularly significant because of Governor Mbah’s continuing commitment to education and human-capital development in Enugu State. His administration has placed education at the centre of its development agenda, with major investments in Smart Green Schools, classroom infrastructure, digital skills, experiential learning and innovation. Recent official figures from the Enugu State Government indicate that more than 7,000 classrooms have been recorded among the administration’s development milestones.

Governor Mbah’s journey from the University of East London to the leadership of Enugu State has therefore become an example of the potential impact of education when combined with vision, enterprise and public service.

His professional journey spans law, business and public administration. After earning his Bachelor of Laws from the University of East London, he proceeded to the Nigerian Law School and was called to the Nigerian Bar. He later obtained a master’s degree in Maritime and Commercial Law from Lagos State University, an MBA from IESE Business School of the University of Navarra in Spain, and a postgraduate qualification in Strategy and Innovation from Oxford University’s Saïd Business School.

As Governor of Enugu State, Mbah has pursued an ambitious development agenda centred on economic expansion, infrastructure renewal, education, healthcare, transportation, technology and institutional reforms.

The administration recently unveiled a compendium documenting more than 10,000 milestones recorded across various sectors, including over 1,521 kilometres of constructed and reconstructed roads, 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres, thousands of classrooms, Enugu Air and other major development projects.

The honorary doctorate from UEL comes at a period when Governor Mbah is receiving increasing recognition for his leadership and development initiatives. Just a day earlier, he was also honoured with a Good Governance Award at the 10th African Community Service Awards in Virginia, United States, for his administration’s efforts in education, healthcare, infrastructure, transportation and economic development.

For Enugu State, the University of East London recognition represents more than a personal honour for the Governor. It also places renewed international attention on the state’s ongoing development drive and its ambition to build a modern, knowledge-driven and investment-friendly economy.

The conferment further reinforces the importance of education as a foundation for leadership, innovation and societal transformation — a principle that has increasingly featured in Governor Mbah’s development philosophy.

From his days as a law student at UEL to his present role as Governor of Enugu State, the recognition underscores a journey shaped by academic excellence, enterprise, resilience and public service.

The honour is, therefore, both a celebration of an alumnus and a recognition of a leadership journey that has continued to attract attention beyond Nigeria.
