Orientation Programme at Awgu Underscores the Role of Youth Service, National Unity and Skills Development in Nigeria’s Future.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has continued to play an important role in promoting national unity, discipline, skills development and community service among young Nigerians, with Enugu State remaining one of the key destinations for corps members deployed for the mandatory one-year national service.
One notable NYSC mobilisation in the state saw 1,600 corps members of the 2023 Batch ‘B’ Stream One deployed to Enugu sworn in at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Awgu Local Government Area. The figure was disclosed by the then Enugu State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Gladys Adama, during the swearing-in ceremony.
The orientation programme was designed to prepare the corps members for their service year while exposing them to discipline, leadership, vocational skills and entrepreneurial opportunities. NYSC authorities encouraged the corps members to participate actively in camp activities and take advantage of the skills-acquisition programmes available to them.
During the ceremony, Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, represented by the then Deputy Governor, Ifeanyi Ossai, urged the corps members to remain committed to national unity and avoid actions capable of deepening divisions in society.
The governor also expressed the state’s willingness to strengthen collaboration with NYSC on youth-oriented programmes focused on skills acquisition and poverty reduction.
The swearing-in ceremony also highlighted the importance of discipline and responsible citizenship. The state Chief Judge administered the oath of allegiance, charging the corps members to remain law-abiding during and after their service year.
Enugu has continued to receive successive batches of corps members. In April 2025, for instance, 1,071 corps members—471 males and 600 females—were sworn in at the Awgu Orientation Camp. During that ceremony, NYSC officials commended the Enugu State Government for its support, including the approval of a solar borehole project to improve water supply at the camp.
Beyond the traditional objectives of national integration, the NYSC programme has increasingly placed emphasis on entrepreneurship and practical skills, giving young graduates opportunities to develop capacities that can support them beyond their service year.
For Enugu State, sustained cooperation between the government and NYSC remains important in ensuring that corps members have a conducive environment to serve, learn and contribute meaningfully to their host communities.
The experience of corps members in Enugu therefore goes beyond the mandatory service year. It represents an opportunity to strengthen national cohesion, encourage youth participation in community development and equip young Nigerians with skills that can contribute to economic growth.
