Over 230 Young Innovators and Essayists Challenge Traditional Approaches to Water Access, Conservation and Sanitation.

ENUGU, NIGERIA — Youth innovation has emerged as a major force in Enugu State’s drive towards sustainable and equitable access to clean water, following the successful 2026 Enugu Water Sustainability Summit (EWSS).
Held under the theme, “Water for All: Driving Innovation for Water Equality, Sustainability and Resilience,” the summit brought together government officials, development partners, academics, private-sector stakeholders, civil society organisations and young innovators to explore practical solutions to the state’s water and sanitation challenges.
Organised by the Enugu State Ministry of Water Resources, the initiative placed particular emphasis on harnessing the creativity and technological abilities of young people through a Hackathon Challenge and an Essay Competition.
The response from young people was significant, with more than 100 applications for the Hackathon and over 130 essay submissions, demonstrating strong youth interest in contributing to the development of sustainable water solutions for the state.
The Hackathon challenged participants to develop practical innovations addressing areas including water access, conservation, distribution, monitoring and sanitation, while the essay competition examined the question: “Water Inequality in Enugu: Can Innovation Bridge the Access Gap?”
At the grand finale, held on July 3, 2026, at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, the top innovators presented solutions aimed at addressing real-world water challenges facing communities.
Among the standout innovations was Rain Vault, which emerged as the Hackathon winner with a data-driven peer-to-peer micro-utility network designed to capture and store rainwater for use during dry periods.
MOCP Flow came second with a chemical-free filtration concept, while Mmiri Bot, an AI-powered platform designed to streamline water-issue reporting and provide intelligence for authorities, placed third.
In the Essay Competition, Anwuanwu Benjamin Kosisochukwu emerged winner, followed by Ezenwafor Nmesomachukwu Anastacia in second place and Okechukwu Chisom Bierechukwundu in third.
The winners received cash prizes, mentorship and startup support intended to help transform their ideas into practical solutions capable of making a measurable impact.
Speaking through the Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah emphasised the importance of engaging young people in solving the state’s development challenges.
The Governor described the summit as an investment not only in innovation but also in the future of Enugu State, stressing the importance of creating opportunities for young people to develop practical solutions to water and sanitation problems.
The administration has also reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to clean and safe water across the state, describing potable water as a fundamental right rather than a privilege.
According to reports from the summit, the state is strengthening its water infrastructure while working to extend distribution networks to more communities. Projects referenced include the 9th Mile 24/7 Water Scheme and the revitalisation of the Oji River and Ajali Water Schemes.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Engr. Ben-Collins Ndu Jnr., also highlighted the administration’s commitment to building a functional, resilient and people-centred water sector.
The 2026 EWSS therefore represents more than a conversation about water. It demonstrates a growing effort to position research, technology and youth creativity at the centre of public-sector problem solving in Enugu.
As the state continues its water infrastructure expansion, the participation of young innovators could provide new pathways for addressing water inequality, improving service monitoring and developing locally relevant solutions to sanitation and environmental challenges.
The summit’s message is clear: the future of sustainable water management in Enugu will not be built by government alone, but through collaboration with the young minds, innovators and communities whose ideas can help shape a more resilient state.
