AFRAA Membership Opens New Chapter for Enugu’s Regional Aviation Ambitions.

ENUGU, NIGERIA — Enugu Air’s admission into the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) as its 50th member has emerged as a significant continental recognition of the young state-backed carrier, while also signalling a new phase in Enugu State’s ambition to establish itself as a major aviation and economic hub in West and Central Africa.
The development, announced by AFRAA in Nairobi, Kenya, places Enugu Air within the continent’s leading aviation industry association and provides the airline with access to a wider platform for industry collaboration, knowledge sharing and engagement with other African carriers and aviation stakeholders.
AFRAA Secretary General, Abdérahmane Berthé, welcomed Enugu Air into the association, describing state-backed investment in aviation as important to strengthening air connectivity and building a more resilient African aviation industry.
The continental body also indicated its readiness to support Enugu Air in its pursuit of International Air Transport Association Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certification, a move that could further strengthen the airline’s operational credibility as it prepares for expansion beyond Nigeria.
From State Project to Continental Player
Enugu Air commenced commercial operations in July 2025 and has since established itself in Nigeria’s domestic aviation market, operating from Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, with Embraer E170, E190 and E195 aircraft.
The airline’s admission into AFRAA comes only months after it secured its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), authorising it to conduct scheduled commercial operations under its own regulatory approval.
The NCAA described the certification as a major milestone, noting that Enugu Air successfully completed the rigorous certification process in approximately five months and three weeks.
The progression from launching a state-owned airline to obtaining independent regulatory certification and subsequently gaining continental industry recognition represents a notable trajectory for the project.
A Bigger Aviation Vision for Enugu
For the Enugu State Government, Enugu Air is not being positioned merely as an airline but as part of a broader transport, logistics and economic transformation strategy.
The state has previously stated that the airline is expected to expand its fleet and eventually connect Enugu with regional and international destinations, thereby facilitating trade, tourism, investment and movement of people across Nigeria and beyond.
The development also coincides with the ongoing transformation of Akanu Ibiam International Airport following its concession to Aero Alliance Limited.
The Federal Government formally handed over the airport to the concessionaire in June 2026 under a public-private partnership arrangement, with plans for rehabilitation, expansion and improved commercial operations. The concessionaire also expressed an ambition to transform the airport into a leading regional aviation, logistics and commercial hub in Africa.
Together, the airport development and the growth of Enugu Air could potentially create a stronger aviation ecosystem around Enugu, with implications for passenger movement, cargo logistics, tourism and investment across the South-East.
Continental Recognition, Greater Responsibility
While AFRAA membership represents an important milestone, it also raises expectations for Enugu Air to maintain high standards of safety, reliability, customer service and financial sustainability.
The airline’s pursuit of IOSA certification will therefore be closely watched as it seeks to move from domestic operations towards regional connectivity.
For a relatively young carrier, the challenge will be to translate institutional recognition into sustainable operational growth while maintaining the confidence of passengers and aviation stakeholders.
Positioning Enugu for the Future
The AFRAA recognition provides fresh momentum for the vision of positioning Enugu as a major aviation gateway in the region.
If successfully implemented, the planned expansion of Enugu Air, combined with the development of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, could strengthen Enugu’s capacity to serve as a strategic link between the South-East, other Nigerian cities and emerging African markets.
More importantly, the development places Enugu’s aviation ambitions within a broader continental conversation about stronger African airlines, improved connectivity and a more integrated African air transport market.
With Enugu Air now occupying the 50th position in the AFRAA membership structure, the state-owned carrier has secured a place within an important continental aviation network.
