Presidency Says President Will Remain Engaged With National Affairs During Working Vacation.

ABUJA, NIGERIA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has departed Nigeria for Europe to commence a three-week vacation as part of his annual leave, with the Presidency assuring Nigerians that the President will remain actively engaged with critical matters of governance throughout the period.
According to an official statement issued by the Presidency, President Tinubu’s first destination is London, United Kingdom, where he is expected to begin the working vacation. He is scheduled to return to Nigeria after the break and resume participation in political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development comes at a politically significant period, as activities surrounding the 2027 elections continue to gather momentum across the country.
Presidency: Tinubu Remains Engaged
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, said the vacation would not amount to a disengagement from national responsibilities.
Dare explained that the President would continue to receive regular briefings from ministers, service chiefs and other senior government officials handling critical national matters.
According to the Presidency, Tinubu’s decision to proceed on leave followed several months of sustained engagement with major issues concerning Nigeria’s economy, security and governance.
The administration has therefore described the trip as a working vacation, with communication channels expected to remain open between the President and officials in Nigeria.
2027 Politics Looms Large
President Tinubu’s departure also comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections.
The President is expected to return to Nigeria after the vacation to participate in campaign activities, according to the Presidency.
The timing of the vacation has, however, generated political debate. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the decision, arguing that the President’s absence comes at a period when Nigerians continue to face significant economic and security challenges.
The Presidency, on the other hand, maintains that the President’s responsibilities will continue to receive attention despite his location outside the country.
Shettima Represents Tinubu at AU Summit
While President Tinubu is in Europe, Vice President Kashim Shettima is in Luanda, Angola, representing the President at an African Union summit.
The simultaneous absence of the President and Vice President has prompted renewed public discussion about continuity of government and the constitutional arrangements governing presidential absence. However, the Presidency has maintained that national governance remains fully operational.
For now, attention remains focused on the President’s three-week European stay, his continued engagement with government affairs and what his eventual return could mean for the intensifying political activities ahead of the 2027 elections.
