Milestone membership strengthens Enugu’s position in Africa’s aviation landscape as state-owned carrier sets sights beyond Nigeria.

ENUGU, NIGERIA — Enugu State-owned carrier, Enugu Air, has recorded a major milestone in its growth journey after being admitted as the 50th member of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA).
The admission, announced by AFRAA in Nairobi on Wednesday, August 19, places Enugu Air among the continent’s growing community of airlines working toward stronger connectivity and greater integration of Africa’s aviation industry.
AFRAA is the leading trade association representing airlines from African Union member states. Its 50 member airlines collectively account for more than 85 per cent of the total international traffic carried by African airlines, giving the association considerable influence in shaping the continent’s aviation sector.
AFRAA Welcomes Enugu Air
Speaking on the development, AFRAA Secretary-General, Abdérahmane Berthé, welcomed Enugu Air into what he described as the AFRAA fraternity.
Berthé said the airline represents the type of homegrown investment needed to develop stronger and more resilient air connectivity across Africa.
He also indicated that AFRAA would support Enugu Air as it works toward IOSA certification, an internationally recognised aviation safety standard.
The AFRAA leadership further expressed confidence that the airline’s membership would contribute to efforts aimed at advancing a more integrated African aviation market.
Enugu Air: ‘A Major Milestone’
Reacting to the development, Enugu Air Chief Executive Officer, Capt. Tolu Ita, described the admission as a major milestone in the airline’s relatively short history.
Ita said the membership reinforces Enugu Air’s commitment to providing safe, reliable and affordable air travel, while contributing to the broader vision of a unified African aviation market.
According to him, the airline looks forward to collaborating with other AFRAA members and benefiting from the association’s technical and industry support as it expands its network and pursues IOSA certification.
From Enugu to the African Skies
Enugu Air was founded on July 7, 2025, and has its headquarters at Enugu, with operations centred around the Akanu Ibiam International Airport.
The carrier began commercial operations with Embraer aircraft and has since expanded its domestic network to serve multiple Nigerian destinations.
Its membership of AFRAA now provides a continental platform from which the airline can deepen industry partnerships and position itself for future international operations.
Enugu Air’s growth strategy includes further expansion within Nigeria, followed in subsequent phases by the introduction of regional and international routes across Africa, Europe and beyond.
What It Means for Enugu
The development could have wider implications for Enugu State, particularly in the areas of trade, tourism, investment, employment and business connectivity.
A stronger Enugu Air could make the state increasingly accessible to travellers and businesses across Nigeria and, eventually, other African and international destinations.
For a state seeking to strengthen its position as an economic and investment hub in the Southeast, an expanding homegrown airline could also enhance Enugu’s attractiveness to investors and visitors.
The AFRAA membership therefore represents more than an aviation industry milestone. It places the Enugu brand on a broader continental platform at a time when African countries are pursuing greater integration of their air transport networks.
Nigeria’s Growing Role in African Aviation
Enugu Air’s admission also adds to Nigeria’s growing representation within AFRAA.
In June 2026, United Nigeria Airlines, which is headquartered in Enugu, was admitted as a full member of AFRAA, further strengthening Nigeria’s presence within the continental aviation body.
With Enugu now home to two airlines holding AFRAA membership, the state’s aviation profile is becoming increasingly significant within Nigeria and across the continent.
AFRAA says its broader objective is to promote and champion a sustainable, interconnected and affordable air transport industry in Africa.
A New Chapter for Enugu Air
For Enugu Air, the immediate task will be to translate its new continental membership into stronger operational capacity, safety credentials, strategic partnerships and an expanded route network.
The airline’s progression toward IOSA certification and its planned regional and international expansion will be closely watched as it seeks to establish itself as a major player in Africa’s aviation market.
For Enugu State, however, the message from Nairobi is already significant: Enugu Air is no longer looking only at the Nigerian domestic market. The airline is preparing to take the Enugu name to the wider African and international aviation space.
