In a bold move to reposition Enugu as a leading smart and digital economy in Nigeria, His Excellency, Dr. Peter Mbah, Governor of Enugu State, has announced an ₦80 billion Smart City Project for Enugu metropolis.
The landmark initiative is designed to transform the state capital into a technology-driven, sustainable, and inclusive urban center that meets 21st-century standards of living, governance, and commerce.
Speaking during the unveiling at the Government House, Enugu, Governor Mbah described the project as a cornerstone of his administration’s vision to make Enugu “the premier destination for investment, innovation, and quality living in West Africa.”
KEY FEATURES OF THE SMART CITY PROJECT
The ₦80 billion project will cover the following:
-Digital Infrastructure: Deployment of city-wide fiber optics, free public Wi-Fi zones, smart traffic and surveillance systems, and an Integrated Command and Control Centre.
-Modern Housing and Business Districts: Construction of affordable smart homes, tech hubs, and green business parks to attract investors and startups.
-Sustainable Utilities: Solar-powered streetlights, smart water metering, waste-to-energy systems, and climate-resilient drainage.
-Smart Mobility: Intelligent traffic management, e-bus transit corridors, and non-motorized transport lanes across major roads in Enugu.
-Job Creation: The project is projected to generate over 20,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction and operation phases.
ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL IMPACT
Governor Mbah noted that the Smart City will serve as a magnet for local and foreign direct investment, drive youth employment, and improve service delivery in health, education, and security.
“This is not just about buildings and roads. It is about building a future where technology improves governance, businesses thrive, and our people live with dignity and ease,” the Governor stated.
The administration has already commenced stakeholder engagements with urban planners, tech firms, and development partners to ensure timely and transparent execution.

The State Government has called on residents, investors, and the private sector to key into the project, which aligns with Enugu State’s 2030 development agenda.
With this initiative, Enugu is set to join the league of emerging smart cities in Africa, offering a model for innovation-led urban transformation.
