PRESIDENT Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law a bill upgrading the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, to the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Kaduna, in a move aimed at expanding access to specialised higher education and strengthening technical and vocational training in Nigeria.
The development was announced on Friday, October 16, by Daniel Amos, the member representing Jema’a/Sanga Federal Constituency in Kaduna State and Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on House Services.
According to reports by Legit.ng and TheCable, the legislation was sponsored by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas. The law repeals the existing legislation establishing the polytechnic and provides the legal framework for its transformation into a university.
New Institution to Strengthen Technical Education:
Amos said the conversion would create opportunities for the expansion of academic programmes, strengthen research and innovation, and equip students with practical skills relevant to Nigeria’s evolving labour market.
He noted that the new university is expected to contribute to the development of a skilled workforce capable of supporting technological advancement, industrial growth and economic development.
The lawmaker also commended President Tinubu for assenting to the bill, while acknowledging Speaker Abbas for sponsoring the legislation and advancing its passage through the National Assembly.
Yaba Institution Also Gets University Status:
Amos disclosed that the President had also assented to legislation establishing the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Yaba, Lagos. Both bills were sponsored by the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The two institutions are expected to strengthen technology-focused education and vocational training, while creating additional opportunities for students pursuing specialised academic and professional careers.
Implications for Students and Nigeria’s Economy:
The transition of Kaduna Polytechnic to university status is expected to widen access to higher education and strengthen the link between academic learning and practical industry skills.
For students, the change could provide opportunities for broader degree programmes and advanced technical training. For employers and industries, the institution is expected to contribute to the supply of graduates with competencies relevant to engineering, technology, innovation and other technical fields.
However, the effective implementation of the new university’s mandate will depend on the necessary administrative arrangements, academic development and institutional support required for a smooth transition.
The development forms part of wider discussions around strengthening technical education and developing the human capital needed to support Nigeria’s industrial and technological ambitions.
