THE Enugu State Government has alleged that some opposition elements are planning to bring armed thugs and bandits into the state to create panic and undermine public confidence in security ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The allegation was made by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Chidiebere Onyia, during a press briefing at the Government House, Enugu, where he addressed recent security incidents involving members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport and the party’s state secretariat in Enugu.

According to reports published by The Sun and Vanguard, Onyia said the government would not allow political activities to threaten the peace and security it claimed to have sustained over the past three years. However, the government did not publicly provide specific evidence of the alleged plot in the reported briefing.

Government Denies Involvement in Recent Incidents

The SSG also denied allegations linking Governor Peter Mbah’s administration and the governor’s Chief Security Officer, Ifeanyi Osondu, to the incidents involving NDC members on Saturday, October 10, 2026.

On the airport confrontation, Onyia claimed that the dispute arose after the NDC allegedly mobilised supporters for a proposed statewide campaign flag-off at the facility without securing the necessary authorisation from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

He maintained that the airport incident involved the party and the relevant federal authorities, while security personnel intervened to restore order.

Regarding the separate incident at the NDC state secretariat in the GRA area of Enugu, the SSG said the police were investigating the reported clash.

He disclosed that a 43-year-old man, identified as Ifeanyi Nworie, sustained a gunshot injury and received medical attention at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Park Lane, before being transferred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, for further examination.

The government disputed reports of fatalities, maintaining that its findings indicated that no death had occurred. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain subject to the ongoing police investigation.

Mbah Administration Reaffirms Commitment to Peace

Onyia reiterated the state government’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of residents, regardless of political affiliation, religion or personal beliefs.

He stressed that political parties and their supporters must be allowed to exercise their democratic rights, including freedom of association, peaceful assembly and participation in electoral activities.

The SSG further argued that sustained peace and security were essential to the state’s ambition of building a $30 billion economy and attracting investment, tourism and business opportunities.

He urged political parties and their candidates to embrace issue-based campaigns, exercise restraint and respect democratic principles as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

Call for Calm and Credible Investigation

The latest development comes amid heightened political tension in Enugu State, with opposition figures also raising concerns over reported attacks and demanding protection for their members.

For Ndi Enugu, the priority remains the preservation of peace, protection of lives and property, and the guarantee that every political party can participate in the electoral process without intimidation or violence.

Security agencies are expected to establish the facts surrounding the reported incidents and investigate any credible allegations of planned political violence. Any individual found culpable should be held accountable in accordance with the law.

As political activities intensify ahead of 2027, stakeholders are urged to avoid inflammatory rhetoric, verify allegations before circulating them and pursue political disagreements through lawful and democratic channels.
