POLITICAL tension in Enugu State has drawn renewed attention following concerns reportedly raised by opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), over alleged attacks on their members.
The parties are calling for security intervention to protect their members and ensure that political activities can take place in a peaceful and secure environment.
The concerns underscore the importance of protecting the rights of political parties and their members to organise, hold meetings, engage supporters and participate in democratic processes without fear of intimidation or violence.
The concerns followed reported incidents on October 10, when NDC governorship candidate Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa alleged that he and his supporters were attacked while returning from Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu. Reports also indicated that vehicles were damaged and some supporters sustained injuries. The allegations were raised at a joint press conference by opposition representatives on October 12.
Opposition Demands Investigation and Accountability
The opposition parties have urged relevant security agencies and the Federal Government to intervene, investigate the reported incidents and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable in accordance with the law.
PDP governorship candidate Uche Nnaji condemned political violence and called for an end to intimidation, while ADC governorship candidate Ocho Obodoeze expressed solidarity with the NDC and raised concerns about the safety of opposition supporters.
Enugu Government Denies Involvement
Meanwhile, the Enugu State Government has denied involvement in the reported airport incident. The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, attributed the dispute to issues surrounding the planned gathering at the airport, a position the NDC has challenged. The competing accounts underline the need for a thorough, impartial investigation to establish the circumstances of the incident.
Call for Peace Ahead of 2027 Elections
As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, stakeholders are being urged to promote peaceful engagement, respect the rule of law and protect the rights of citizens to participate in democratic activities.
Security agencies are expected to investigate allegations of violence and take appropriate measures to protect lives and property, while political parties and their supporters are encouraged to avoid confrontation and pursue their grievances through lawful channels.
The protection of all citizens, regardless of political affiliation, remains essential to sustaining public confidence in the democratic process.
