GOVERNOR of Enugu State, His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has addressed the growing concerns over political violence in the state, calling for a thorough and impartial police investigation into the recent incidents surrounding a political gathering involving members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a statewide broadcast on Monday, October 12, the governor expressed concern over reports of violence, particularly a shooting incident that left a citizen injured. He sympathised with those affected, including individuals who sustained injuries, residents who experienced fear, and families troubled by the incidents.

According to reports published on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Mbah stressed that every resident of Enugu State, regardless of political affiliation, must be able to exercise their democratic rights without intimidation, threats or violence.

The governor maintained that the protection of lives and property remains a fundamental responsibility of his administration, emphasising that allegations of politically motivated violence must be addressed through lawful and credible processes.

Mbah Calls for Thorough and Impartial Investigation

The governor called on the police to conduct a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the reported incidents, stressing that anyone found culpable must be held accountable through the appropriate legal process, irrespective of political connections or status.

His position comes amid controversy surrounding incidents involving NDC members at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport and the party’s state secretariat in Enugu on Saturday, October 10, 2026.

The Enugu State Government had earlier confirmed that a violent clash occurred at the NDC secretariat and that a 43-year-old man, identified as Ifeanyi Nworie, sustained a gunshot wound. The government said he received initial treatment at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Park Lane, before being transferred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, for further examination.

The government also stated that the police were investigating the incident and denied claims that a death had occurred during the clash.

Political Rights Must Be Respected

Mbah reiterated that political participation must remain peaceful and that citizens should be free to associate with political parties, attend lawful gatherings, express their opinions and support candidates of their choice without fear.

The governor’s position underscores the importance of protecting democratic freedoms as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He also emphasised that justice must be pursued without favour, making it clear that political affiliation should not shield anyone found responsible for unlawful conduct.

Peace and Security Essential to Enugu’s Development

The governor’s intervention comes at a time when political parties and aspirants in Enugu State are expressing concerns over the safety of their members and supporters following reported attacks.

The state government has maintained that sustained peace and security are essential to its development ambitions, including its goal of transforming Enugu into a $30 billion economy and strengthening its position as a destination for investment, business and tourism.

Meanwhile, opposition political figures have called for credible investigations into reported attacks and measures to prevent further violence. The allegations and counter-allegations surrounding the incidents make an impartial investigation particularly important to establishing the facts and ensuring public confidence.

A Call for Restraint Ahead of 2027

As political activities intensify, the governor’s message places renewed attention on the need for restraint among political parties, their supporters and other stakeholders.

Residents and political actors are expected to prioritise peaceful engagement, issue-based campaigns and respect for the rule of law over confrontation and intimidation.

The credibility of the democratic process depends not only on the conduct of elections but also on the ability of citizens to participate freely and safely throughout the political season.

For Enugu State, the immediate priority remains establishing the facts surrounding the reported incidents, protecting affected residents and ensuring that anyone found responsible faces the consequences prescribed by law.
