MORE than 30,000 teachers in Enugu State have endorsed Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for a second term in office, citing improvements in teachers’ welfare, increased education funding, promotion opportunities and ongoing reforms in the state’s education sector.

The endorsement was announced at a rally organised by the Teachers for Grassroots Movement (TGM) at Okpara Square, Enugu, on Saturday, October 10, 2026. The gathering brought together teachers from public, private and mission schools across the state, with more than 12,000 participants reported to have marched through parts of Enugu metropolis before the rally.

The teachers also endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election ahead of the 2027 general elections, according to reports by the Enugu State Government and the News Agency of Nigeria.

NUT HAILS TEACHERS’ WELFARE INITIATIVES

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Enugu State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Theophilus Odo, commended the Mbah administration for what he described as significant interventions in the education sector.

Odo highlighted the harmonisation of teachers’ retirement benefits, recruitment of additional teachers, timely payment of salaries, clearance of outstanding promotions and opportunities for professional development.

He also welcomed the construction of Smart Green Schools, noting that the facilities were expected to improve teaching and learning conditions for pupils and teachers across the state.

The NUT chairman subsequently declared the union’s support for Mbah’s second-term ambition, according to the state government’s account of the event.

PRIVATE SCHOOL OPERATORS ACKNOWLEDGE COMPETITION AND REFORM

The Chairman of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) in Enugu State, Nelson Agu, also commended the government’s education initiatives.

Agu said the Smart Green Schools programme had encouraged private school operators to improve their facilities and standards in response to the state’s renewed focus on education.

He particularly praised the reported allocation of 33 per cent of the state’s annual budget to education for three consecutive years, describing the investment as a significant commitment to the sector.

The reported endorsement reflects support from sections of the teaching community and education stakeholders for the administration’s policy direction. However, the views expressed at the rally should not automatically be interpreted as representing every teacher or education worker in Enugu State.

GOVERNMENT HIGHLIGHTS SMART GREEN SCHOOLS PROJECT

Governor Mbah, while responding to the endorsement, said education remained central to his administration’s ambition to transform Enugu State’s economy and improve the prospects of its young people.

He highlighted plans and ongoing interventions involving Smart Green Schools, classroom construction, digital learning resources, free school uniforms and feeding programmes.

The state government has reported plans for more than 260 Smart Green Schools across the state’s political wards, alongside the construction of thousands of classrooms and investments in technology-enabled learning.

Mbah maintained that teachers would play a critical role in determining the success of the administration’s education reforms, stressing the importance of equipping pupils with the knowledge and skills required for future economic and social development.

ACCOUNTABILITY, QUALITY AND SUSTAINABILITY REMAIN KEY

While the endorsement has added to the political conversation ahead of the 2027 elections, the broader question for residents remains how effectively the announced education investments translate into measurable improvements in classrooms.

Beyond infrastructure and budgetary allocations, critical indicators include teacher-to-pupil ratios, the availability of qualified teachers, attendance and retention rates, literacy and numeracy outcomes, school maintenance, and equitable access to quality education in rural and urban communities.

Independent monitoring of project delivery, transparent reporting of education expenditure and regular publication of learning-outcome data would help residents assess the actual impact of the reforms.

The state government and education authorities also have an opportunity to sustain engagement with teachers, parents, school proprietors, civil society organisations and communities to ensure that policy commitments produce lasting benefits for learners.

As Enugu State approaches another election cycle, the performance of the education sector is likely to remain an important issue for voters assessing the record, priorities and future commitments of political officeholders.
