The Enugu Education Summit 2026 has commenced in Enugu, bringing together education leaders, teachers, government officials, development partners and other key stakeholders to deliberate on strategies for transforming the state’s education sector and improving learning outcomes.

The three-day summit, holding at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, is organised by the Enugu State Ministry of Education through the Centre for Experiential Learning and Innovation (CELI) under the theme, “Transforming Education for the Future.”

The summit is placing particular emphasis on quality teaching and learning, professional standards for teachers, technology and innovation, education financing, infrastructure, policy implementation and sustainable education development.

Representatives of UNESCO and UNICEF are participating in the summit, alongside educators, learners, school owners, government institutions, development partners and industry stakeholders. Their participation is expected to strengthen technical discussions around sustainable education reforms and effective implementation.

A major focus of the gathering is the need to strengthen the teaching profession through continuous professional development, improved standards and the acquisition of relevant digital and pedagogical skills.

Stakeholders at the summit are also examining how technology can be effectively integrated into classrooms without undermining the central role of teachers. The discussions come against the backdrop of Enugu State’s ongoing investment in technology-driven education and teacher capacity development.

Through its partnership with UNICEF and other organisations, the state has already supported digital training for teachers in its Smart Schools. Six hundred teachers across 30 Smart Schools have received practical training aimed at strengthening their digital and pedagogical competencies and helping them make more effective use of tools such as smart boards and the Nigeria Learning Passport.

The summit is also expected to provide a platform for stakeholders to further validate and strengthen the state’s education strategy, particularly in the areas of funding, infrastructure, teacher capacity, governance, planning and measurable implementation.

This direction is consistent with Enugu State’s broader Education Sector Plan 2026–2035, which places emphasis on access, equity and inclusion, quality teaching and learning, infrastructure, teacher development, governance, financing and effective management.

Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah is expected to deliver the Executive Address titled “The Audacity of Enugu’s Education Transformation and Sustainable Financing for Education,” followed by the unveiling of the Enugu State Education Policy.

The final phase of the summit is expected to feature further policy and sector-planning discussions, including a technical financing roundtable involving UNICEF and UNESCO, with emphasis on the resources, planning and accountability required to sustain education reforms.

The summit comes as Enugu continues to pursue an ambitious education transformation agenda, including the development of Smart Green Schools across the state’s 260 wards, recruitment and training of teachers, and the expansion of digital learning opportunities.

For EMV, the success of these reforms will ultimately depend not only on policy announcements and infrastructure investments but also on transparent implementation, adequate funding, effective monitoring, teacher empowerment and measurable improvements in what children actually learn in classrooms.

The summit therefore provides an important opportunity for government and stakeholders to move from commitments to measurable results, ensuring that education policies translate into better opportunities and stronger outcomes for children and young people across Enugu State.

Enugu Media Village (EMV) reports that the summit reinforces the importance of education as a foundation for human-capital development, economic growth and sustainable development, while highlighting the need for accountability and public participation in the implementation of education reforms.
