300-Bed Enugu International Hospital Poised to Strengthen Specialist Care, Reduce Medical Tourism.

ENUGU State is positioning itself as a major regional healthcare destination as the administration of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah advances investments in specialised medical infrastructure, primary healthcare and human-capital development.
At the centre of the transformation is the 300-bed Enugu International Hospital, a quaternary healthcare facility designed to provide advanced specialist services and attract patients from across Nigeria and other parts of West Africa. The facility, according to recent reports, is awaiting inauguration and is equipped with modern diagnostic and treatment infrastructure, including MRI and CT suites, intensive care facilities, dialysis units, modular theatres and other specialised services.
The development reflects the state government’s broader ambition to make Enugu a medical tourism hub in West Africa. The Enugu State Ministry of Health identifies the development of a modern and accessible healthcare system and the positioning of the state as a destination for quality medical services as key priorities.
Governor Mbah had earlier stated that the International Hospital was conceived to reduce the need for Nigerians to travel abroad for specialised medical treatment while attracting patients and healthcare professionals into Enugu. The administration is also seeking to build a healthcare ecosystem that links primary, secondary and advanced specialist care.
Beyond the flagship hospital, the state’s healthcare transformation includes the development of 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres, upgrades of existing hospitals and continued strengthening of medical education and specialist capacity.
The strategy is expected to deliver benefits beyond healthcare, including employment opportunities, professional development, medical research, hospitality, aviation and other sectors connected to medical tourism.
The growing focus on healthcare infrastructure also complements recent efforts by the Enugu State Government and development partners to sustain gains in primary healthcare, family planning and community-based health services.
With the Enugu International Hospital approaching inauguration, the state is increasingly presenting healthcare not only as a social responsibility but also as a strategic component of its economic development agenda.
