Government Begins Engineering Assessment as Blocked Drainages and Waste Disposal Worsen Stormwater Flow.

The Enugu State Government has commenced an assessment of recurring flooding along sections of the Nsukka–Enugu corridor, with authorities identifying blocked drainage channels, silt accumulation and indiscriminate disposal of refuse as major factors affecting the free flow of stormwater.
The assessment was led by the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ben Osy Okoh, alongside the Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Engr. Jude Asogwa, during an inspection of sections of Enugu Road in Nsukka affected by flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
According to the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, preliminary observations showed that several drainage channels had been significantly obstructed by refuse, silt and other debris. The blockages have reduced the capacity of the drainage system and contributed to the accumulation of water during intense rainfall.
Following the inspection, the ministry said it would explore a combination of engineering interventions, drainage maintenance and desilting operations to restore effective stormwater flow along the affected corridor.
Public sensitisation on the dangers of dumping refuse into drainage channels will also form part of the intervention, as authorities seek to address both the infrastructure and environmental factors contributing to the recurring flooding.
The planned measures are expected to improve drainage performance, enhance road safety and reduce disruptions experienced by residents and motorists using the important Nsukka corridor.
The development also underscores the need for sustained cooperation between government and residents in keeping drainage channels free of refuse. Enugu State Waste Management Authority (ESWAMA) provides drainage and environmental maintenance services and conducts public sensitisation on proper waste disposal.
The intervention comes as the state continues to pursue wider infrastructure improvements, including road construction and rehabilitation, with drainage management increasingly integrated into road development and urban resilience planning.
