The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has commended the Enugu State Government for its sustained prioritisation of education and human capital development, highlighting the state’s significant budgetary commitment to the sector under the administration of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.
UNICEF’s engagement with the state has highlighted Enugu’s continued investment in education, primary healthcare and other social services as part of efforts to improve outcomes for children and families. In 2025, the state government disclosed that education received 33 per cent of its budget in both the 2024 and 2025 budget cycles.
The administration’s education strategy has included major investments in school infrastructure, technology, teacher development and curriculum innovation. The state has also been implementing its Smart Green Schools initiative as part of a broader effort to strengthen learning environments and prepare children for a changing economy.
More recently, UNICEF reported that 600 teachers across 30 Smart Schools in Enugu were receiving practical digital-skills training, including the use of smart boards and the Nigeria Learning Passport to support classroom learning.
The partnership between UNICEF and Enugu extends beyond education to areas including child health, nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene, social protection and broader human development. In March 2025, UNICEF and the state government signed a multiyear 2025–2027 work plan aimed at strengthening cooperation in these areas.
Governor Mbah has repeatedly described education as a central component of the state’s development strategy, arguing that sustained investment in human capital is essential to reducing poverty, improving productivity and preparing young people for future economic opportunities.
The state’s 2026 budget maintained education as a major priority, with 32.27 per cent allocated to the sector, demonstrating that education remains a significant component of the administration’s development agenda.
The continued collaboration with UNICEF is expected to further support initiatives aimed at improving learning outcomes, strengthening child and maternal health services, promoting child protection and advancing human development across Enugu State.
For Enugu, the emphasis on education and child-centred development represents an investment not only in classrooms and healthcare facilities, but also in the long-term capacity of its people to drive sustainable economic and social progress.
