Preparations are gathering momentum across Nigeria ahead of the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1, 2026, with the Federal Government and state authorities organising activities to commemorate the historic milestone.

The Federal Government has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee to coordinate the anniversary programme, with the celebrations designed to provide an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey since independence, honour the sacrifices of its founding fathers and consider the challenges and opportunities ahead.

The 2026 anniversary is being commemorated under the theme, “From Reforms to Stability: Consolidating Nigeria’s Renewed Hope for Shared Prosperity.” At a World Press Conference in Abuja on September 24, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, said the theme reflects the Federal Government’s stated objective of moving from economic reforms and stabilisation towards growth and broader opportunities for citizens.

According to the official programme, the anniversary activities began with the Juma’at Service on September 25, followed by a Church Service on September 27. The programme continues with an Independence Day Public Lecture on September 30, while President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to deliver a nationwide broadcast on October 1.

The Federal Government has also indicated that this year’s celebration will be low-key, while encouraging Nigerians to use the occasion for reflection on the country’s 66-year journey and the contributions of citizens to national development.

Across the states, activities have already commenced. In Kwara State, government representatives, traditional rulers and religious leaders recently participated in a special Juma’at service in Ilorin to mark the anniversary, with prayers for peace, unity and continued progress in the country.

The anniversary also comes at a time when national discussions are focused on economic reforms, security, infrastructure, human capital development and efforts to expand opportunities for Nigerians.

At the September 24 press conference, the Federal Government said its next phase would focus on ensuring that the gains it attributes to ongoing reforms translate into tangible improvements, including greater economic opportunities, jobs, access to education and wider participation in national development.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria this week to participate in activities marking the Independence Anniversary. According to the Presidency, he is also scheduled to attend the October 1 premiere of a documentary on the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola at the National Theatre in Lagos.

As Nigerians prepare to mark October 1, the anniversary is expected to provide another opportunity for citizens, leaders and institutions to reflect on Nigeria’s history, celebrate its cultural diversity and consider the collective responsibilities required to strengthen national unity and development.

Since gaining independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960, Nigeria has experienced significant political, economic and social transformations. The 66th anniversary therefore represents both a celebration of the country’s journey and an opportunity to reflect on its future direction.

With activities already underway across the country, attention is now turning towards October 1, when Nigerians will formally mark 66 years of independence.
