ENUGU — The Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (ESIRS), in collaboration with BusinessDay, is set to host a tax breakfast meeting aimed at bringing taxpayers, business operators, tax administrators and other stakeholders together to discuss the rights, obligations and responsibilities of taxpayers under existing tax laws.
The engagement is expected to provide an opportunity for stakeholders to gain clearer understanding of the tax system while promoting constructive dialogue between revenue authorities and members of the business community.
The meeting will focus on issues surrounding taxpayer rights, tax obligations, compliance, administration and the responsibilities of businesses and individuals within the state’s revenue framework.
Promoting Tax Awareness and Compliance
Tax awareness remains an important component of an effective revenue administration system. For taxpayers, understanding applicable laws and obligations can help improve voluntary compliance and reduce misunderstandings arising from tax assessment and administration.
For revenue authorities, direct engagement with taxpayers provides an avenue to explain existing procedures, address concerns and receive feedback from businesses and other stakeholders.
The proposed breakfast meeting therefore provides a platform for dialogue on how the tax administration process can become clearer, more transparent and responsive to the needs of taxpayers while ensuring compliance with applicable laws.
Strengthening Government-Business Engagement
The engagement also comes against the backdrop of growing efforts to strengthen the relationship between government institutions and the private sector in Enugu State.
Regular consultations between tax administrators and taxpayers can help businesses better understand their statutory responsibilities while enabling revenue authorities to identify areas where information, procedures and communication can be improved.
For entrepreneurs, companies and other taxpayers operating within the state, greater awareness of tax requirements can also support better financial planning and regulatory compliance.
Focus on a Sustainable Revenue System
The meeting is expected to contribute to broader conversations around building a sustainable and accountable tax administration system in Enugu State.
As stakeholders deliberate on taxpayer rights and responsibilities, the engagement will provide an avenue to promote lawful compliance, improve public understanding of taxation and strengthen communication between the revenue service and the business community.
