President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, impartiality and political neutrality as the country prepares for the 2027 General Elections.
The President gave the directive at the 2026 Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers held in Owerri, Imo State, in an address delivered on his behalf by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume. The conference is focused on developing a roadmap for effective security management during elections.
Tinubu stressed that the Police must not be perceived as an instrument of any political interest, but as a national institution responsible for serving Nigerians and protecting the constitutional order.
He said every Nigerian, regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity, religion, social status or geographical location, should feel protected by the Police, noting that neutrality and professionalism are essential to public confidence in the electoral process.
According to the President, securing the 2027 elections will go beyond protecting polling stations and electoral materials. It will also require the protection of voters and electoral officials, peaceful campaigns, prevention of intimidation and violence, and the creation of an environment where citizens can participate in the democratic process without fear.
Tinubu Seeks Stronger Police Capacity
The President also called for stronger intelligence gathering, faster response times, deeper community engagement, greater use of technology and improved cooperation between the Police and other security and electoral agencies.
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting police reforms through investment in personnel, training, technology, intelligence infrastructure, operational logistics and welfare.
Tinubu further tasked senior police officers to develop practical and implementable strategies capable of strengthening election security and building public confidence ahead of the 2027 elections and beyond.

At the same conference, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu warned officers against compromising their neutrality or abusing their powers during the electoral cycle.
Disu outlined a six-point approach centred on intelligence and early-warning systems, training, joint operations, communication, community partnerships and neutrality. He also warned political actors against vote-buying, arms mobilisation, intimidation and the use of thugs during elections.
The IGP said election security must begin well before election day, with the Police working proactively to identify potential flashpoints, protect voters and electoral personnel, and respond rapidly to emerging threats.
The Federal Government’s position, as conveyed by President Tinubu, places professionalism, impartiality, public safety and institutional accountability at the centre of preparations for the 2027 electoral cycle.
