The Nigeria Police Force has issued a nationwide security alert following intelligence indicating possible coordinated attacks by terrorist elements on places of worship, schools, NYSC orientation camps and other vulnerable locations across the country.
The alert, contained in a police wireless communication dated September 13, 2026, directed police formations and commands nationwide to intensify security operations and take proactive measures to prevent any possible attacks.
According to the intelligence cited in the alert, there has been increased mobilisation of terrorist elements, with particular areas of concern identified across the North-East, North-West, North-Central and parts of the South-West.
The police also reported intelligence concerning the movement of armed elements from Katsina through Kaduna towards Plateau State, while suspected ISWAP operatives and their collaborators were said to be conducting surveillance of potential targets.
The Force expressed particular concern over possible threats to educational institutions as schools resume for the 2026/2027 academic session, noting that terrorists could attempt to exploit the concentration of students and staff.
In response, Commissioners of Police and other commanders were directed to strengthen intelligence-led surveillance, patrols, stop-and-search operations, access control and rapid-response arrangements around identified vulnerable locations.
The police further ordered tighter security at state borders, entry and exit routes and other critical approaches to prevent the movement and infiltration of armed elements.
Security agencies were also directed to strengthen collaboration with school authorities, religious leaders, NYSC management and other relevant stakeholders to improve information sharing and establish effective early-warning mechanisms.
The development has also prompted heightened vigilance in some states. In Osun, Governor Ademola Adeleke urged residents to promptly report suspicious persons and movements to security agencies, particularly in border communities, following reported threats against worship centres.
The latest security alert comes as authorities continue efforts to safeguard lives and property and prevent criminal and terrorist elements from exploiting vulnerable communities.
The Nigeria Police Force has consequently called for vigilance, intelligence sharing and cooperation between citizens and security agencies as part of efforts to prevent potential attacks.
