Emergency Agency Leads Multi-Agency Search After Four-Storey Building Collapse in Independence Layout.

ENUGU — The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is coordinating ongoing search and rescue operations following the collapse of a four-storey uncompleted building at Independence Layout, Enugu State.

The building reportedly collapsed at about 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2026, with reports that some persons were trapped beneath the rubble. NEMA immediately activated its Enugu Operations Office and deployed an Emergency Rescue Team to the scene.

According to NEMA, the rescue team commenced operations upon arrival after being informed that victims might be trapped inside the collapsed structure. An excavator was subsequently mobilised to facilitate the careful removal of debris and enable responders to reach possible survivors.

As of 11:20 a.m. on Sunday, the joint rescue team had recovered the lifeless body of one male victim from the rubble, while search operations continued to determine whether other persons remained trapped beneath the collapsed structure.

The rescue operation involves several agencies, including NEMA, the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Nigeria Police Force, the Enugu State Fire and Rescue Service, the Enugu State Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA), and the Enugu State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.

The incident has renewed concerns about building safety, construction standards and regulatory compliance, with authorities expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

The emergency response remains focused on searching the debris and establishing whether additional victims are still trapped at the site.
